Is your academy trust selling goods or services over the internet?

19th Oct 2022

Many schools and academy trusts are constantly developing ways in which to increase their income streams.

One of the popular ways of doing this currently is by selling goods or services via the school and academy trust websites. For example, the provision of lettings facilities with an online booking platform.

Whilst this is positive, there is one potential compliance issue which the academy trust should be aware of.

If the trust is VAT registered, then under The Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002, it must display the VAT registration number on the website.

We therefore recommend that where your trust is carrying out such activities via the website and has duly VAT registered, it should ensure this number is displayed.

This can be done by simply adding the VAT registration number alongside the company’s own registration details i.e. name, number and office.
